spring equinox in the southern hemisphere.

Stonehenge Aotearoa Star Trails

This composite of 179 separate images shows star trails around the South
Celestial pole region, the total time elapsed is 1 hour and 44 minutes. A near
first quarter Moon was present which helped illuminate the foreground.
Canon 10D, ISO800,18mm lens at f3.5, each exposure was 25 seconds long.

Hunters Moon

The October full Moon is known as the Hunters' Moon. In earlier times,
following the harvest in September the fields were clear and the hunter
could use the light of the moon to spot game at night.

Argo Navis

This large constellation was one of the 48 constellations described by
the ancient astronomer Ptolemy in his Almagest. In the 18th century the
French astronomer Lacaille divded it into three smaller constellations,
Carina the Keel, Puppis the Stern or Poop, and Vela the Sail. The
bright star Canopus appears top center with the Large Magellanic Cloud
to the left.
