eclipse

Submitted by: Tony Travaglia at 2008-09-26 18:24:01

I was lucky enough to be in Western Australia for the partial lunar eclipse, in August, no tripod so the camera was rested on the car. Canon 40D and the Canon 400mm lens.

Another Moon Dance with me. 9/15/08. Fairbanks, Alaska

Submitted by: Jeff Pederson at 2008-09-17 00:39:01

What's in your sky? Another image from one of two substorm that animated the sky during my watch last night. Mild temperatures, moonlit landscape, and a herd of curious musk oxen made for a pleasant night. This shot is looking west. fnjjp@uaf.edu

Autumn Moon Dance, 9/15/08 in Fairbanks.

Submitted by: Jeff Pederson at 2008-09-17 00:16:01

I was out last night for a few hours and was treated to two substorms, with spectacular twists and turns. Although the light from the full moon drowned out much of the color, the display definitely had the most attitude for this latitude so far for this season. . ASA 1600, 4 sec., f4.0, 12 mm. (1.5x). The volcanic afterglow

Submitted by: Michael Ellestad at 2008-09-14 04:33:01

After timelapsing the sunset I go out and see this deep red glow in the west and I knew it was not an aurora because aurora come from the north. This amazing glow was from the west and after doing an exposure the sky turned this brillian pink and purple and was unlike anything I ever saw in the sky. This is without a doubt the first volcanic sunset I have photographed. Copyright (C) Michael Ellestad

2008-10-04 04:01:00 UTC: N47.25 W93 - GunFlint Trail, Grand Marais MN

On Oct 2nd I whitness the AU a few miles in from the North Shore of MN. Purple, Red and Green beams circling around on each other for 2 hrs in 32f frigid air, so I called it quits.

White glow, slight pulsing for about 20 minutes at around 10 pm then slowly faded.

2008-08-18 10:00:00 UTC: N59.7 W151.75 - Homer, Alaska

Saw a low diffuse arc through a hole in the clouds. Bright moonlight wiped out any decent viewing but it was at least something!

2008-08-09 09:45:00 UTC: N60.55 W152.4 - Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

About half way between Homer and Anchorage I spotted a faint glow in the north while driving. THis brightened and formed a greenish arc at about 20 degrees elevation. The arc brightened rapidly and went into breakup with nice rays. It was exciing to see the aurora again.
